• Tag 2: Reflexive Verbs and Reflexive Pronouns
  Our first new topic this semester is the concept of reflexive verbs, which need to use a reflexive pronoun, like "ich wasche mich" or "ich putze mir die Zähne". You'll need to learn both the vocabulary for these verbs, as well as the grammar of how to use them in sentences. Remember that the accusative (mich/dich) forms are used when the object is yourself, but the dative forms (mir/dir) are used when there is a body part or clothing mentioned as the direct object. • Tag 4: Reciprocal Verbs and Reflexive Verbs with Prepositions
  Our topic for Day 4 was expanding our understanding of reflexive verbs by adding new vocabulary for more abstract meanings, as well as reflexive verbs that take set prepositions, like "ich interessiere mich für Kunst" or "du ärgerst dich über deinen Mitbewohner". In addition, we discussed the use of reciprocal verbs, like "wir kennen uns schon lange" where the reflexive pronoun means 'each other'. This wraps up our new learning for reflexive verbs, so you'll definitely need to spend time memorizing the new vocabulary: the Quizlet flash cards for the verbs with prepositions should help with memorization, and you can use the files below for further explanations.

• Tag 6: The Conditional Subjunctive and würde + infinitive Constructions
  In today's class, we learned the conditional (Konjunktiv II) forms of verbs: in English, we say "I would buy a house if I had enough money" -- in German you'll use the conditional and würde+infinitive forms to say "Ich würde ein Haus kaufen, wenn ich genug Geld hätte". All verbs have a one-word 'true' conditional (wäre, hätte, möchte, käme, wüsste, and so on), but in many cases, even Germans prefer to use the "würde" helping verb (like English 'would') and an infinitive at the end of the clause. • Tag 9: Subordinating Conjunctions and Word Order
  Although you may have learned the basics in a prior semester, it's now time to really master the placement of verbs both in normal sentences, but also in complex sentences using subordinating conjunctions like weil, dass, wenn, and many others. Remember that the verb (normally in second position) gets 'kicked' to the end of the clause after these conjunctions; it's especially tricky if you start a sentence with a conjunction, because you'll end up with word order like "Wenn ich eine Konjunktion benutze, muss ich die Verben umstellen". • Tag 10: Adjective Endings and Adjectival Nouns
  We're returning to the topic of adjective declension -- the small endings that go on adjectives to show gender and case such as "ein alter Mann" but "mit einem alten Mann" and many other forms. After reviewing the rules for adjective endings, we also learned to use adjectives to function like nouns -- adjectival nouns or substantivierte Adjektive -- which simply capitalize the adjective but use the same endings as they would if there were a noun following. • Tag 11: The Future Tense with werden
  German doesn't usually need to use the future tense: remember that you can simply put a future time element into a normal present tense sentence to express that you're going to do something, such as "Ich gehe am Freitag ins Kino." But there are times where you may need to strongly emphasize that you WILL do something, or that an event WILL happen, and in those cases, you'll want to use the helping verb "werden" along with an infinitive to form the real future tense: "Ich werde am Freitag ins Kino gehen" is the strongly emphasized "I will go to the movies on Friday." Since werden is an irregular verb, you'll need to memorize the conjugation, but using it as a helping verb is very simple and shouldn't need a lot of explanation.

• Tag 11: Optional Placement Test Activity
  Since we have some extra time in class tonight, one optional activity is to work through a 'placement test' that can show you your level of German knowledge according to the European Standard Framework: the scale goes A1 - A2 - B1 - B2 - C1 - C2 from beginner all the way up to native speaker. You should be somewhere around B1 at this point, if you've been mastering the material we've learned over the last two semesters. You don't have to complete this, it's simply an optional activity that may interest you, and which we may complete in class depending on time and interest.

  In order to ask and understand and give directions around a city (using a map or other information), you'll need to be familiar with certain set phrases like "Biegen Sie nach links ab" or "Gehen Sie geradeaus". Tonight we'll practice navigating through maps using this vocabulary, which you will be expected to understand for our chapter test. We'll also be discussing the various ways to say "to" a place, such as "nach Deutschland" or "ins Kino" or "auf den Markt" or "zum Arzt" using the nach, zu, in, an, auf prepositions. • Tag 13: Nationalities, Countries and Languages
  Although you may know many country names already, it's time to learn how to use the adjectives and nouns of nationality in proper structures. To say something like "He is an American" remember than you do not use "ein" and you must use the proper noun: "Er ist Amerikaner". But to say "That is an American movie" you'll need the lower-case adjective form with the proper adjective endings: "Das ist ein amerikanischer Film". Each country has a nationality noun as well as an adjective form, which you'll need to become familiar with using the files below.

  The topic of relative pronouns is quite tricky for most students, because it requires a deep understanding of sentence structure and when to use the nominative, accusative or dative cases. As an example, to say "the man that was here" in German, you'll need to use the masculine nominative pronoun: "der Mann, der hier war", but to say "the woman who I talked to" you'll need to use the feminine dative pronoun with the preposition: "die Frau, mit der ich gesprochen habe". • Tag 18: Review of Past Tenses (das Präteritum, das Perfekt, das Plusquamperfekt)
  Tonight's learning is a review of the past-tense verb forms we learned in second-semester German: the Perfekt tense used in conversational speech (ich habe gemacht, ich bin gegangen), the Präteritum or simple past used in storytelling (ich machte, ich ging), and the past perfect or Plusquamperfekt used to indicate something that came before another past event (ich hatte gemacht, ich war gegangen). Because this is review, it's simply a matter of remembering the formations and rules for these tenses. • Tag 19: The Future Perfect Tense (das Futur II)
  To say sentences like "I will have completed it by Friday" you need to use a combination of the future tense (werden) and the perfect tense (gemacht haben), both in English and in German, so the sentence will come out at "Ich werde es bis Montag fertig gemacht haben". The only tricky thing to watch for in German is the use of the helping verb "sein" for verbs which show a change in location or condition, so in order to say "I will have gone to work by then" you'll need to use "Ich werde bis dann zur Arbeit gegangen sein". To practice the future perfect constructions, there are some Quizlet flash cards as well as the files used in class today.

  Using verb participles as adjectives is similar in both German and English: we can use the present participle to indicate an ongoing action ("a sinking ship") or the past participle to indicate a completed action ("a sunken ship"). • Tag 24: The Past Subjunctive (Konjunktiv der Vergangenheit)
  The past subjunctive is used to say "I would have done" something in the past (but you didn't actually do it). It is based off of the Perfekt tense, but instead of "habe" or "bin" for the helping verb, the past subjunctive uses the conditional forms "hätte" or "wäre" (ich hätte das nicht gemacht = I wouldn't have done that, ich wäre dorthin nicht gegangen = I wouldn't have gone there). When using a modal helping verb ("I should have done that") then simply use the helping verb "hätte" and place the double infinitives at the end of the clause: ich hätte das machen sollen. • Tag 25: The Special Subjunctive for Indirect Speech (Konjunktiv I für Indirekte Rede)
  To report what other people said, German will use one of two forms of the subjunctive mood. In casual speech, the conditional subjunctive (like 'hätte' or 'wäre' or 'ginge') is the normal choice ("Er sagte, er wäre krank"). But in official reporting such as newspapers, television news and academic writing, the special subjunctive formed from the infinitive stem ('sei' or 'habe' or 'gehe') is used instead ("Er sagte, er sei krank"). Although you won't need to use this mood often in your own speech, it's vital for understanding written and spoken news and other reports in German. • Tag 27: The Passive Voice
  The passive voice is used to say what was done or is being done, usually without naming the agent. For example, an English passive sentence is "mistakes were made" in which we don't know who made the mistakes. In German, the passive voice uses the helping verb "werden" (where English simply uses "is") and the past participle (ge-form, like English 'made'), so the same sentence in German would be "Fehler wurden gemacht." You'll need to be able to form sentences in both the present tense passive ("es wird gemacht") and the simple past ("es wurde gemacht") forms as well as with modal verbs ("es kann gemacht werden"). • Tag 28: Uses of Werden, Wurden, Würden
  By now, you're probably feeling a little confused by all the different forms of the verb 'werden' and its uses and meanings. Werden can be a main verb meaning become ("es wird kalt" = "it's getting cold"), it can be a helping verb for the future tense when the infinitive is used ("es wird kalt sein" = "it will be cold"), it can be a conditional form with umlauts ("es würde kalt sein" = "it would be cold"), and it can be the helping verb for the passive voice when the ge-form is used ("es wird gemacht" = "it is being done" or "es wurde gemacht" = "it was done"). To help sort out these various meanings and see werden used in many different ways, the following documents from class can help as we finish off our chapter's material.
