  We learned that German nouns are either masculine ('der'), feminine ('die') or neuter ('das') in the singular. You need to memorize the gender article with the noun as you learn vocabulary. • Tag 5: The Verb "Haben" (To Have)
  The verb "to have" is the second verb you need to memorize completely. We will be using it often, and it is vital to learn quickly. Here is the conjugation of "haben" in all subjects, plus an explanation of how to use "gern" with "haben" to say you like something. Also remember to drill yourself on the "haben" conjugation using the Quizlet flash cards!

• Tag 5: The Accusative Case for Direct Objects
  A major topic from today's lesson is the accusative case for direct objects. English has nothing similar, so you will need to get used to remembering that the masculine article "der" changes into "den" when the noun is a direct object (after the verb haben and most other verbs).   It is important to practice German numbers often and make sure you know how to form them, spell them, and understand them when you hear them! Remember that numbers between 20-99 are somewhat 'reversed' from English: 27 is "siebenundzwanzig", seven-and-twenty. • Tag 6: Word Order (Verb Second) and Questions
  German word order in statements is usually similar to English, but a concrete rule of German is that the conjugated verb must always be the second element; this can cause errors if you're trying to come directly from English. • Tag 11: Telling Time, Time of Day
  Telling the time is only a bit tricky, mostly because there are two different formats: casual 12-hour time using phrases like "Viertel nach elf" or "halb eins", and the more formal 24-hour time using "dreiundzwanzig Uhr fünfzehn" or "zwölf Uhr dreißig". These files help you learn both the 12-hour and 24-hour time and practice giving the time in German.

• Tag 11: Dates, Ordinal Numbers, Birthdays
  Giving the date in German is always in the format "der zweite Januar" -- date then month. The date needs a -te or -ste added to the number; that is called an ordinal number (like 'first' or 'second' in English). These files help you practice and understand how to give the date in German.

• Tag 11: Question Words
  You have picked up most of the question words already, since they are mostly similar to English: wann, wie, wo, was, wer, warum, and so on. Here is a short handout to ensure you know the meanings of the question words in German.

• Tag 12: Stem-Changing Verbs
  Remember that stem-changing verbs still take the same endings as regular verbs! The only difference is that in the "du" and "er/sie/es" forms, these verbs change their middle vowel: the e will change to i (geben - er gibt) and the a will umlaut to ä (fahren - du fährst). Here are the materials we used in class to learn and practice the stem-changing verbs.

• Tag 13: Negation with Nicht and Kein
  Making a statement negative in German is a little tricky, because you not only have to consider the placement of 'nicht' in the sentence, but you also need to remember to use 'kein' (or 'keine' or 'keinen') with a noun, instead of using 'nicht'. Here are the materials we're using to practice negating sentences with 'nicht' and forms of 'kein'.

  The present tense (ich komme, er liest, etc.) can also be used as meaning the future tense in German, as long as a time element is added for clarity in the sentence. So you'll need to get comfortable with time elements like "jeden Tag" or "heute Abend" to create effective meanings.   Using the possessive articles — mein, dein, sein, ihr, unser, euer, Ihr — requires learning both the meanings of the words, as well as the grammar involved in adding the -e and -en endings when necessary. Possessives act exactly like the words "ein" and "kein" so you can learn their proper endings fairly easily.

• Tag 17: Adjective Endings
  Adjective endings are a little tricky! Putting an ending (such as "alter" or "neues" or "kleine") on an adjective in German indicates the gender of the following noun, but the endings will be different depending on whether there is an ein-word ("ein altes Buch") or a der-word ("das alte Buch") before the adjective. We went through several activities in class to help us learn and understand these forms.

  We are learning many adjectives to describe how people are in terms of personality, qualities, and mood. • Tag 19: Modal Verbs (Modalverben)
  Modal verbs are the helping verbs like können ('can'), müssen ('must'), wollen ('want'), sollen ('should'), dürfen ('may') and mögen ('like'). They have a different conjugation from regular verbs, and when used in a sentence, the modal verb is placed second, while the action infinitive verb moves to the end of the sentence. • Tag 20: Imperative Forms for Commands
  Forming commands in German requires knowing whether you're talking to a stranger ("kommen Sie!", "essen Sie!", "fahren Sie!"), a group of friends or children in the ihr-form ("kommt!", "esst!", "fahrt!") or a close friend in the du-form ("komm!", "iss!", "fahr!"). The du-forms are the trickiest because the stem-changing verbs do keep their I/IE changes, but do not keep their umlauts in the command forms; the ihr forms simply remove the pronoun ihr, and the Sie forms look exactly like questions, just stated with more force. To learn and practice the imperative forms for commands, we used the following materials in class:

• Tag 20: Accusative Prepositions
  There are eight prepositions in German which require using the accusative case ('den/einen/meinen' for masculine, but no changes for feminine, neuter or plural). The prepositions are "für" (for), "ohne" (without), "durch" (through), "gegen" (against, or around a time), "um" (around a place, or at a time), "bis" (until), "pro" (per), and "entlang" (along). Whenever you use one of these words, the noun immediately following must be placed in the accusative case. Here are the explanatory files we used to learn the accusative prepositions:

• Tag 23: Mögen (ich mag) and Möchten (ich möchte)
  We already learned the modal verbs last chapter, and at that point we briefly introduced the verb 'mögen' (to like). Now we come back to mögen and contrast it with a related verb 'möchten' (would like). The difference is the same as English: "I like something" (always or in general) uses "ich mag" (mögen), while "I would like something" as a request or polite invitation uses "ich möchte" (möchten), the subjunctive form.

• Tag 23: Adverbs and Word Order (Time - Manner - Place)
  Adverbs are small words or phrases that clarify when, how, why or where the action of a sentence occurs. You know many adverbs already, but we're consolidating and expanding them now. In addition, German word order rules require that adverbs and phrases be stated in the order TIME - MANNER - PLACE in any normal sentence, which is different from English. Below is an explanation of word order plus a list of adverbs that you'll find yourself wanting to use in more detailed sentences.

• Tag 24: Separable-Prefix Verbs and Inseparable-Prefix Verbs
  German has a type of verb that 'separates' when conjugated: the prefix comes off and moves to the end of the sentence when the verb is formed, but the prefix is attached to the verb when it's in the infinitive form. The verb "aufräumen" for example means 'to clean up'; when it's in a sentence as the conjugated verb, it separates ("Ich räume mein Zimmer auf") but when it's in the infinitive unconjugated form it stays together ("Ich soll mein Zimmer aufräumen"). There are also some verbs whose prefixes never separate, but those are treated just like normal verbs, such as 'besuchen' or 'verkaufen'.   The dative case is a major new topic that we'll be talking about and expanding upon over several class periods. The first introduction to the dative case deals with how to form articles in the dative (M-R-M-N, or 'dem' masculine, 'der' feminine, 'dem' neuter and 'den' plural), and how to use the dative for the indirect objects -- the recipients or beneficiaries of the action -- in a sentence.   There are eight dative prepositions: aus, außer, bei, mit, nach, seit, von and zu.
