Kapitel 5: Feste und Feiern

The vocabulary topics are holidays, festivities, shopping, colors, and clothing. • Tag 2: The Perfekt (Past Tense) with 'haben' Helping Verb
  Our big new topic as we begin this chapter is the Perfekt tense -- the normal past tense in German, which is formed like "ich habe gemacht" or "ich habe gesehen". • Tag 4: The Dative Case (Indirect Objects and Prepositions)
  If you had our class last semester, we learned the Dative Case toward the end of the semester (chapter 4). If you had a different textbook, then you may not have learned the Dative Case in your class, so you'll need to familiarize yourself with the topic: it involves changing the articles (der-die-das-die) into different forms (dem-der-dem-den) for the indirect objects (recipients or beneficiaries) in a sentence, as well as after the dative prepositions (aus-außer-bei-mit-nach-seit-von-zu).

• Tag 5: Accusative and Dative Pronouns
  You already know how to use articles (der, den, dem, die, das) in the accusative and dative cases, but we are now learning to use pronouns to stand in for nouns. Small words like 'mich' and 'mir' or 'ihn' and 'ihm' are pronouns that need to be used correctly in both the accusative (mich, dich, ihn, sie, es, uns, euch, sie, Sie) and dative (mir, dir, ihm, ihr, ihm, uns, euch, ihnen, Ihnen) cases.

• Tag 5: Oktoberfest and Karneval (Fasching)
  A major Autumn celebration in Southern Germany is Oktoberfest; a major Spring celebration in Western Germany is Karneval, sometimes called Fasching or Fastnacht. In class we discussed the history and some interesting facts about both celebrations. This material will not be directly tested.

• Tag 6: Two-Way Prepositions of Placement and Location
  The two-way prepositions, or Wechselpräpositionen, are the last major 'type' of preposition to learn in German. These prepositions -- an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen -- take the accusative case when the objects after them are in motion (being placed somewhere) but the dative case when the objects are resting (in a static location). In addition, the verbs stellen, stehen, legen, liegen, setzen, sitzen and hängen are often seen in combination with these prepositions. You will need to practice using some of the materials below.

• Tag 7: Wissen and Kennen ('to know')
  German has two verbs that mean 'to know': kennen means to be familiar with people, places and works of art (like Spanish conocer or French connaître), while wissen means to know facts and answers to questions (like Spanish saber or French savoir). Wissen is an irregular verb: ich weiß, du weißt, er weiß, wir wissen, ihr wissen, sie wissen, but kennen is regular. You'll need to be able to distinguish between wissen and kennen as well as know their conjugated forms.

• Tag 8: Review for Chapter Test
  As a review for the chapter test, in class we went through the following presentation, as well as review game with many questions similar to those on the test; we also went over material in our textbook for extra practice. The topics you'll need to know for the test are the Perfekt tense of verbs (ich habe gespielt, ich bin gegangen), the accusative pronouns (mich, ihn, sie, etc.), the dative pronouns (mir, ihm, ihr, ihnen, etc.), the two-way prepositions (an, auf, hinter, in, neben, über, unter, vor, zwischen) and verbs of placement (legen, stellen, setzen, liegen, stehen, sitzen, hängen), the verbs wissen and kennen, and vocabulary for clothing as well as celebrations and parties.

• Tag 11: The Simple Past (das Präteritum / das Imperfekt)
  The Simple Past is the other past tense used in German writing, literature, stories and journalism. It is simpler than the Perfekt tense, but there are still many verbs and rules to memorize. Regular ('Weak') verbs simply add -te endings in the simple past (ich machte, er lernte, du spieltest) while Irregular ('Strong') verbs change their stem forms and do not add endings (ich ging, er sah, du kamst). We will be working with many of these files over the next 2-3 class days as we learn to understand and use this past tense used in nearly all forms of written German.

  We have three small topics in one day, because each doesn't take very long to understand. The Da- and Wo-compounds are the only ones that sometimes need extra explanations (using "dafür" = for it or "worauf" = onto what? is all that's involved), while the hin- and her-prefixes (not tested directly) and the coordinating conjunctions (und, aber, oder, sondern, denn) are quite straightforward. • Tag 17: Word Order Review and Expansion
  We reviewed the basic concepts of word order: SVTMP and verb second for statements. But we also added in new information about the subordinating conjunctions like dass, weil, wenn and ob that will 'kick' the conjugated verb out of second position and move it to the end of the clause. The basic review word order is necessary for our continued learning; the 'kicker' conjunctions will not be tested until next semester, but you will start to see them more and more often in our readings and worksheets, so you should have a basic understanding of how they work.

• Tag 18: Verbs with Set Prepositions
  Certain verbs in German have prepositions that naturally accompany them in phrases; the difficulty is that prepositions are arbitrary and they can be different from what we say in English. For example "to wait for" in German doesn't use 'for' but rather "warten auf"; similarly, "to be afraid of" doesn't use 'of' but rather "Angst haben vor". You will need to memorize around 15 set verb + preposition combinations, as explained and practiced in the files below.

• Tag 20: Infinitive Clauses (zu + infinitive, um/ohne/statt ... zu)
  When using phrases like "it's fun to do that" or "I don't have time to go", you will need to add the word "zu" before the infinitive verb. This is a fairly straightforward concept: no verbs are changed or modified, you're simply adding the word "zu" and making sure to keep German word order rules. The additional structures of "um ... zu" (in order to ...), "ohne ... zu" (without doing ...) and "statt ... zu" (instead of doing ...) also use this same concept. See the files below for further explanations.

• Tag 21: Time Expressions and Indefinite Pronouns
  Using time expressions -- such as diesmal, das letzte Mal, nächsten Sommer, letztes Jahr, vor einem Monat and many others -- is mostly a matter of learning set expressions and remembering that time prepositions use the dative case, while times without prepositions use the accusative. Also remember word order: SVTMP or TVSMP for normal sentences! For the topic of indefinite pronouns (words like etwas, nichts, jemand, niemand, and man), there are only about seven words to memorize, which should make it a fairly quick topic to learn! Feel free to look over the materials we used in class for these two topics.

• Tag 24: The Past Perfect - das Plusquamperfekt
  The past perfect tense — for example in English "I had already eaten" or "I had been sick" — is not very complicated in German; it simply builds off of what you already know about the Perfekt tense. Instead of the helping verb "hat" or "ist" in the present tense, the Plusquamperfekt will use the helping verbs "hatte" or "war" plus the participle ge-form, resulting in sentences like "ich hatte schon gegessen" and "ich war krank gewesen". You will also need to understand word order changes when using the conjunctions 'bevor', 'nachdem' and 'als' with the past perfect.

  A fairly straightforward vocabulary topic: the words for technology and internet-related media are mostly similar to English, although there are some unique words you will need to memorize. • Tag 25: Comparatives and Superlatives
  Comparative adjectives ("besser" and "älter" and "interessanter") are relatively simple to form, following a few rules; superlatives ("am besten" or "der beste Film") are a little trickier because there are two different uses: the "am besten" forms are used when they are not connected to a noun/thing, while the "der/die/das beste ..." forms precede a noun directly. We will continue to practice and expand with how to use the comparatives and superlatives with their proper endings on the next class day, but you should become comfortable with the basic forms and uses in the files below.

  Although we learned the concept and rules for adjective endings in our first semester class, it's a tricky topic that needs repetition and review. Because we're now using comparative and superlative adjectives, you'll find yourself needing to add endings in sentences. Remember that the basic rules are that an adjective needs to show the gender/case of a noun only if the article does not show the gender and case; 'changed' articles like dem, der, den will always make the adjectives end in -en. You can review the file from last semester as well as the practice activities we'll use in class on day 26 below.

  Our last new vocabulary topic this semester is 'traffic' and 'transportation', including many ways of talking about cars and the parts of vehicles, plus accidents and other traffic incidents that you may encounter when traveling in German-speaking countries. Make sure to learn to recognize this vocabulary for the upcoming chapter test; you will not need to know genders or spelling, but you will need to recognize what the words mean and match them to their English counterparts.

• Tag 28: The Genitive Case and Genitive Prepositions
  Our final topic is the last of the four German cases, the genitive case which is used to show possession or belonging to. It works very much like the English "of" or the Spanish "de" words, simply combined with an article: "der Name meines Vaters" = the name of my father or my father's name. The trickiest part is remembering that English can use a possessive ('my father's') but German can only place the noun into the genitive case ('of my father', meines Vaters). The genitive prepositions — anstatt, außerhalb, innerhalb, trotz, während, wegen — are a bit tricky to remember but simple to use: simply put the following noun into the genitive case using the "Ss-R-Ss-R" line of our endings chart.
